Chapter 2 Case Study

Chapter 1

The first telephone was discovered by accident by Alexander Graham Bell in March 1876,
since then phones have evolved to pretty much every need. The first mobile telephone call
was made in St. Louis Missouri, USA from a telephone mounted on a car dashboard on June
17th 1946. The call made history and researchers around the world began investigating
for a way to make telephones handheld aswell as mobile.

Doctor Martain Cooper a Motorola researcher and executive and his team of researchers were the first to develop a mobile handheld phone in the USA on a new network called a cellular network. This is the use of radio frequencies coming from a mast which we still use nowadays. The first call made by a mobile phone was on April 3rd 1973. The first phones weighed 2 poundsand were so big they were nicknamed The Brick .The phones cost $3,995 and only wealthy politicians and important buisness men could afford them. These phones weren't commercially availible to the public and were only made commericially availible to the public in 1983. These phones had a talk time of a half an hour and took 10 hours to charge. Demand for these phones was strong despite the very little talk time and short battery life; waiting lists were in the thousands.

On the 6th March 1983 the US launched the 1G network. The 1G stands for 1st generation. The phones we use nowadays are 4G so 4th generation. The 1G network cost over $100 million to develop and didnt properly take off untill 10 years later.

Now that handheld phones had been invented people could communicate faster than ever before. The invention of text messaging in 1993 helped this even more so. Now that people had mobile phones people stopped writing letters and visiting people as much as they used to. The age of technology had begun and soon every body had a mobile phone. Phones come in and out of fashion as time goes on and each year people learn how to make phones smaller and have a longer battery life.
